On the occasion of its Fall/Winter 2021 Men’s runway and Women’s pre-collection, LOEWE presents A Show in a Book, inviting guests to explore Jonathan Anderson’s inspirations. Paul Auster, Edmund White and Georges Perec.

This publication gathers rarely seen artworks, comics, printed matter and ephemera Brainard created during the 1960s and 70s, with a preface by his close friend, the poet Ron Padgett, and an essay by art critic Éric Troncy.

In his foreword to the book, Jonathan Anderson writes: ‘I have been drawn to Joe Brainard’s body of work, in particular his collages, and his ability to create things out of the everyday. As an artist, a writer, an illustrator and a poet, he thought and acted outside of rulebooks and categories, and there is a lightness and an immediacy in his work that I find acutely apt for this very moment, and indeed any moment. I have thought of this publication as a ‘show in a book,’ the catalogue of an exhibition that has yet to take place, and an accompanying manifesto to the LOEWE collections it inspired.’

Edited and designed by M/M (Paris), the book is housed in a giant fold-out cloth dust jacket reproducing Brainard’s Untitled (Bow), a colorful collage from 1967. In the elaborate folds of the dust jacket, two sewn booklets printed on tracing paper present the men’s runway and women’s pre collections.

This publication will be distributed by Printed Matter as a stand-alone volume when the collections are commercially available in June 2021, with all proceeds going to Printed Matter and Visual AIDS. Visual AIDS is an organization which utilizes art to fight HIV/AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting artists living with HIV, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over. Printed Matter is the world’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination, understanding and appreciation of artists’ books, and supports a community of thousands of artists and independent publishers from around the world.

A monogrammed bookstrap holds the book together with A Show on a Shirt, a cardboard box containing an oversize T-shirt on which the newest Eye/LOEWE/Nature collection is reproduced, as worn playfully by the actors Stéphane Bak and Omar Ayuso. For the first time, the men’s and Eye/LOEWE/Nature collections are presented together to offer a rounded view of the LOEWE man and his many facets, of which environmental consciousness is central, as well as a dialogue with the outdoors and nature.

A Show in a Book and A Show on a Shirt are new installments of the original formats —show-in-a-box and show-on-the-Wall— that Jonathan Anderson has devised to present LOEWE collections in response to unprecedented times.
