Starting off 2022 with a bang, Toronto’s Virginia To Vegas (Derik Baker) has delivered yet another smooth, undeniably catchy 3-song EP. Hidden behind a shiny 80s pop-synth vibe is ‘it’s a little complicated, but i’m okay’, the perfect soundtrack for anyone in a situationship, or post-breakup. Released following an overwhelmingly positive response to his 2021 single, “amnesia”, the new EP ‘it’s a little complicated, but i’m okay’ is available everywhere now.
“I think with all of my music, I try to write songs that feel like they are soundtracks to the listener’s own personal movie,” explained Baker. “Everyone lives such a unique life but a lot of our experiences are exactly the same, so my goal is just to write music that everyone can relate to and makes them feel something.”
Written by Baker, Geoff Warburton (Shawn Mendes) and Mike Wise (Ellie Goulding, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys), the three tracks mark Baker’s first release this year. Made remotely and using ideas that Baker had thought of and started writing out at home or in hotel rooms from years ago, he put his thoughts together and sent them to friends and new collaborators. “There’s a few new writers who I worked on this EP, literally over voice notes,” said Baker. “Haley Joelle for one, is having a moment right now, and I think she’s such a talented young artist, and we literally wrote the song [“outerspace”] in five minutes.”
“Another big Nashville influence came from Seth Ennis, a great country artist in his own right, [who collaborated on “no excuses”], but also one of the writers for one of my favorite bands right now, THE BAND CAMINO.”
Following Baker’s remarkable success in 2020 — he was the second most played Canadian artist on radio (behind The Weeknd), released two EPs and became a 4X PLATINUM-selling artist. Baker was unstoppable in 2021, garnering more than 451 MILLION global streams and an increasingly growing fan base across Asia, with Singapore, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia in his Top 15 Streaming Markets worldwide. His previous single, “amnesia” was picked up by 12 radio stations across Southeast Asia, which include Kiss 92 FM (Singapore), 96.8 Elfara FM (Indonesia), Phoenix Radio Bali and more.
